After the city of Atlanta was burned to the ground during the Civil War, Atlanta’s downtown area emerged during the Reconstruction. Downtown Atlanta still boasts some of the original architecture from the nineteenth century. Woodruff Park is a six acre park in Downtown and the site for the Phoenix Memorial, which depicts the city’s rise from the ashes of the Civil War. Downtown has recently undergone a transformation that includes new residential and business construction.
